How to take a taxi in Korea
Call, hail and pay for a taxi with less confusion—from checking the plate to handling tolls, late-night surcharges and airport rides.

Taxis are useful when you have luggage, miss the last train or need a door-to-door ride. The easiest trip starts before you get in: save the destination in Korean, choose a payment method and know whether the ride should use a meter or an app price.
Choose how to call the taxi
A ride-hailing app is usually the simplest option because it records the destination, estimated fare, driver and license plate. Kakao T is widely used, while traveler-accessible services can be easier when you do not have a Korean phone number or card. Uber Taxi is also available in Korea through the Uber app. Supported registration and payment methods can change, so set up your preferred app before a late-night ride.
You can also hail an available taxi at a marked stand or on the street. Avoid stopping where taxis cannot pull over safely, including bus stops and busy intersections.
Before getting in
- Save the destination’s Korean name and full road address.
- Check the estimated route and fare in a map or taxi app.
- Match the app’s license plate with the arriving vehicle.
- Confirm the taxi type if you selected a larger or premium vehicle.
- If you hailed the taxi, show the Korean address before the ride starts.
여기로 가 주세요. (yeogiro ga juseyo) means “Please take me here.” Keep the address open on your screen rather than relying only on an English place name.
Meter, app fare and extra charges
For an ordinary street-hailed taxi, check that the meter is running. App-booked rides may use a metered, estimated or pre-determined fare depending on the service selected. Seoul applies late-night and out-of-city surcharges, and airport tolls may be added separately. Taxi categories such as deluxe, large or premium vehicles have different rates.
Do not use an old blog post as a fixed price list. Review the current fare shown by the app or the local government before a long or late-night ride.
How to pay without paying twice
Many taxis accept Korean transportation cards, credit cards and cash, while an app may charge the registered payment method automatically. Before paying in the vehicle, check whether the app already processed the fare. If you pay by card or cash, ask for a receipt and keep it until you have checked the charge.
카드 돼요? (kadeu dwaeyo?) means “Can I pay by card?” Carry a backup payment method in case a foreign card or app payment fails.
Airport taxis
At Incheon Airport, follow signs to the official taxi stands and use the designated queue. Do not follow unsolicited drivers inside the terminal. Confirm the taxi type, destination, expected tolls and whether the journey uses a meter or an approved airport section fare before departure.
An airport bus or AREX may be better during heavy traffic, while a taxi can be worth the cost for groups, large luggage, late arrivals or accommodation far from a station.
During and after the ride
- Follow the route on your phone, but allow for traffic and legal turn restrictions.
- Wear the seat belt and keep small bags with you.
- Check the seat and floor before closing the door.
- Save the plate number and receipt if you leave an item behind.
- For serious danger, call 112. For travel help or interpretation, contact the 1330 Korea Travel Helpline.
If the fare looks wrong
Ask for a receipt and keep the app record, plate number, pickup and drop-off locations, time and fare. Seoul taxis display a QR complaint system for reporting problems, and official tourist assistance can help explain the next step. Do not confront a driver aggressively; document the ride and report it through the appropriate channel.
